I agree with everyone that Travel John portable urination devices are simple, clean, and effective products. However, I want to share two important tips to help people use them.
1. Travel John's are not vacuum devices, and they depend on natural gravity to direct your liquids down into the plastic sleeve where they become solid. That means you must raise your hips high enough to create a definite downward flow so gravity can work its magic. I bought Travel John's primarily to use out on the water in my kayak, while tent camping, and occasionally in my car in traffic. I've used a Travel John while in a normal sitting position in my car and in my kayak. It's comfy to sit like that, but I wasn't raised up enough and I got some unwelcome backflow. So be sure to raise yourself up higher than normal sitting position. Yeah, it's not as convenient as sitting normally acting like nothing is happening, but the product only works well when there is a clear downward flow to the bottom of the collecting sleeve where it turns to solid. You can't cheat gravity, and you will get wet pants if you try...
2. A used Travel John is an awkward and embarrassing thing to carry around. Although small and innocuous when it's new, the used Travel John expands to 12" long and 3" in diameter when it's filled with liquid. And it's also quite hefty in weight because the solid is filled with liquid. Carrying around this substantial tube with a funny-looking spout on the end is not a pleasant experience. So I wrap and carry my unused Travel John's in a regular disposable plastic grocery bag with the tissue and clean wipes. Nothing to cause notice and when the Travel John is used, the plastic grocery bag is very convenient to hide the contents, provide extra protection from any leakage, and enable you to carry the used bag without notice until you can throw it away. And the free disposable grocery bags even come with carry handles...
So those are my two tips for making a Travel John better fit your normal lifestyle. I've got them stashed in my car, kayaks, and camping gear when needed. It's one less thing to be worried about when nature calls. And nature always calls more often as we get older...
This is an awesome, completely portable and disposable product for those times when you HAVE to go and just don't have access to a sanitary bathroom. Even at a rest stop. This tiny little device is so small it could fit in a pocket or purse, or glove box, but it will expand when you need it to. It can hold 28 oz, which is plenty, and the gel forms instantly, so there's no spilling risk. Great for small bladders that can't wait for the next exit on road trips. And MUCH cleaner than carrying around a little portable potty or other similar container which often stinks and could easily spill.
